1/10/2024 0 Comments Lazy susanHe spent much of his career studying outbreaks of pneumonia and tuberculosis, and grew critical of Chinese hygienic practices-including in the way people ate. Wu Lien-Teh, a doctor of Chinese descent who was born in Malaysia and educated at Cambridge, helped to reshape theories of disease in China. Mason's hunch echoes the first-known revolving dinner table in China-found, rather oddly, at a 1917 public health conference in Canton. “The origin probably lies in the transmission of the innovation from European forms, likely in Hong Kong, Canton, or Shanghai.” “Historically, I can't recall any example earlier than the 20th century,” says Lark Mason, an American expert on Chinese antiques, via email. Many Chinese people do remember rotating tables built decades ago-but their origin story is hazy. If you turn to historical accounts of Chinese furniture, you'll find that dining tables tended to be rectangular, and didn't rotate. In this sense, it worked very much like a tabletop Lazy Susan.īut Wang's table certainly wasn't used in the dining room. Wang's solution was to make the table move, so the typesetter didn't have to. He faced the challenge of organizing thousands of individual Chinese characters (alphabetic languages, by contrast, require about 100). Its author, Wang Zhen, was a Chinese official who helped pioneer movable type. The first known mention of a Chinese revolving table, and the source of much speculation about the Lazy Susan's origins, comes from the 700-year-old Book of Agriculture. So for now, we have to leave our friend Susan-whose identity, by the way, is lost to history-in the 20th century, and turn back the clocks to 1313. This means that a century ago, the name Lazy Susan had nothing to do with Chinese food. Restaurateur Johnny Kan in the center, 1965 Basically, the idea was to buy a “dumb-waiter” so you could layoff your real waiter. All three devices were used in Europe and America to save domestic labor during meals. Back in the early-1900s, however, “Lazy Susan”-previously known as a “dumb-waiter”-described not only revolving tabletops, but also revolving tables, as well as elevators that carried plates and food. Today, it describes a spinning platter that rests on the tabletop. Technically, the “Lazy Susan revolving table” isn't a table at all. Let's take a minute to get the name straight. So either this style of eating really was, so to speak, made in China, or it had been outsourced from the West even during an era of chilly international relations. The plane’s crew was promptly treated to lunch-served on a Lazy Susan. And just before President Nixon's historic 1972 visit, the first American commercial flight in decades landed in Shanghai, 23 years after Chairman Mao Zedong severed most of China's ties with the West. In 1971, an American visitor to Taiwan found them in common household use. The composer Igor Stravinsky ate off one in 1959, at a Chinese restaurant in Japan. You don't really find fortune cookies in Asia, but Lazy Susans, by contrast, are all over. Other times, as in the case of fortune cookies, an object only seems traditional because it's so ubiquitous. Sometimes objects catch on because they're traditional. emphasizes the democratic nature of the meal.” But of course, tracing the roots of a tradition can be tricky business. A popular book of food anthropology even called it an “ethically ideal table shape. In the decades that followed, travel guides and restaurant reviews proclaimed the Lazy Susan a Chinese tradition. Diners gathered around a big round table, chopsticks ready, and turned the Lazy Susan to bring each dish within reach. The New York Times described one piled with crab rolls, dumplings, and moon cakes at a celebration of the 1965 Mid-Autumn festival. The Washington Post described a 1963 Chinese New Year celebration by highlighting crispy duck, shark's fin, and a Lazy Susan. Lazy Susans became standard fare during the 1960s. Staples like chow mein, chop suey, and fortune cookies had vague culinary roots in Asia, but all three were invented stateside. Chinese food wasn't as ubiquitous back then as it is today, and it wasn't necessarily that Chinese, either. Through the 1950s, many Chinatown restaurants had a reputation for being dingy and cramped, but the introduction of lazy susan tables was the key element in a transformation toward refined and spacious restaurants. Its new look-in American restaurants, at least-revolved around a single piece of furniture, the “Lazy Susan” rotating table. Sixty years ago, Chinese food got a makeover.

Much like the open world aspects of the usual LEGO games, gold bricks are the main collectibles of the game to level your character – and your rocket – up, and are obtainable by completing quests from characters you meet. With the terrain being composed entirely of individual LEGO bricks, this can leave some rather jagged faces, so another aspect to the tool can gently and pleasingly smooth those out. Further on you’ll encounter the Paint tool which can coat surfaces with different landscaping effects like lava, ice, or piano notes, the Copy tool which allows easy duplication of objects, and the powerful Landscaping tool which can shape the environment, carving chunks from the earth or flattening as appropriate. The character was then later developed further. The character DeathSpank originated in Ron Gilbert's Grumpy Gamer comics, created by Gilbert and Clayton Kauzlaric. The game is being designed to be comfortable to play in short segments, ideal for more casual gamers, but also boasts over 15 hours of gameplay. The decision to keep classified documents at Mar-a-Lago - a property frequented by paying members, their guests and anyone attending the weddings, political fundraisers, charity dinners and other events held on site - was part of a long pattern of disregard for national security secrets. And of course there won’t be because they’re making it all up.” “There has to be some objective, contemporaneous, evidence-based corroboration of the claims that they’re making. While he said it is true that there is no statute or order that outlines procedures the president must abide by to declassify information, “at the same time it’s ludicrous to posit that a decision to declassify documents would not have been contemporaneously memorialized in writing.” “It just strikes me as a post hoc public affairs strategy that has no relationship to how classified information is in fact declassified,” said Laufman, who oversaw the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s personal email server during her tenure as secretary of state. But David Laufman, the former chief of the Justice Department’s counterintelligence section, said that’s not how it works. Trump allies have tried to claim the presidency granted him unlimited power to unilaterally declassify documents without formal declaration. And White House officials have repeatedly said they had no prior knowledge of plans to search the estate. The judge, however, has also supported Republicans. The former president and his allies have argued the move amounts to political persecution, noting the judge who approved the warrant has given money to Democrats. A top executive at the business pleaded guilty last week in a tax fraud case brought by the Manhattan district attorney.īut few legal threats have galvanized Trump and his most loyal supporters like the Mar-a-Lago search. Meanwhile, Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination as he testified under oath in the New York attorney general’s long-running civil investigation into his business dealings. A Georgia investigation into election interference has moved closer to the former president, with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a top defender, informed earlier this month that he is a target of a criminal probe. The investigation into Trump’s handling of documents comes as he’s facing mounting legal scrutiny on multiple fronts. Asked directly if he kept any classified information upon leaving office, former Vice President Mike Pence told The Associated Press on Friday, “No, not to my knowledge.” Others in the Trump administration took more care with sensitive documents. And as my time went on, I could certainly see why.” John Bolton, who served as Trump’s third national security adviser, said that, before he arrived, he’d heard “there was a concern in the air about how he handled information. Classified information was tweeted, shared with reporters and adversaries - even found in a White House complex bathroom. Official items that would traditionally be turned over to the National Archives became intermingled with his personal belongings in the White House residence. He routinely tore up official papers that later had to be taped back together. But Trump’s flouting of the Presidential Records Act, which outlines how materials should be preserved, was well documented throughout his time in office. Why Trump refused to turn over the seized documents despite repeated requests remains unclear. Officials have not revealed exactly what was contained in the boxes, but the FBI has said it recovered 11 sets of classified records, including some marked “sensitive compartmented information,” a special category meant to protect secrets that could cause “exceptionally grave” damage to U.S. The search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club earlier this month to retrieve documents from his White House years was an unprecedented law enforcement action against a former president who is widely expected to run for office once again. 1/10/2024 0 Comments Sony mediacenterOther DJs use laptops, have their music on a big hard drive and play it with software. Two DJ CD players, a mixer, two thick folders with burned CDs and a wooden box with original CDs. People look at me in disbelief when they see the luggage I arrive with. Old school is funĮven today, I still play music at parties from time to time. My remaining CDs are probably limited to about 1,000. Because even used CD albums with pop and rock classics are virtually worthless.įinally, before my last move, someone who can be safely described as a total music nerd took my collection. My job changed again and I decided to part with my collection - as painlessly as possible. We also forced our trainees and interns to do this - after all, they had to learn that the job of a music editor also entails disposing of old promotional CDs. My colleague and I used every free minute to stick the silver discs to the ceiling with adhesive tape. Probably the most creative solution was to cover the ceiling of our office in the Deutsche Welle broadcasting center with CDs. So, it's better to give them away or put them out on the sidewalk for passersby to take them - or make art out of them. Some of the author's favorite CDs, bought in the 1990s My collection exploded - it needed its own room. Once a month I went on a "foray" in Cologne, and when I came home with my bulging backpack full of new releases, there were still two to four packages in front of the door. The record companies, many of which were based in Cologne at the time, were very generous with promotional CDs. It took on almost absurd proportions when I changed careers and became a music editor. Records and turntables collected dust and ended up in the basement. Next to my record shelf, a CD shelf sprang up and quickly grew, spreading like weeds through the living room. I bought jazz and classical music, and more and more pop, rock, soul and funk. I spent horrendous sums on new Pink Floyd and Prince CDs, and on The Beatles' White Album - the most important record of my life to this day. My favorite records had become so crackly that I was eager to enjoy this music without noise for a change. Over the years, CD players and CDs became more affordable, record stores had to rearrange as music fans started to trade in their vinyl collections for CDs - just like me. The author traded in her crackly White Album vinyl for a CD version They multiplied like weeds And this success came despite the fact that nobody knew how long the data on the discs would last. And the price wasn't cheap: A CD cost 30-40 German marks (about €15-20), more than twice as much as a long-playing record. In 1984, 3 million CDs were sold in Germany alone in 1989, the figure was 54 million. Both companies had worked together on the development and were soon able to sit back and relax, because the CD business was going through the roof. Champagne for all!Ī short time later, Sony and Philipps launched the first freely available CD players on the market for around €1,200 - unaffordable for many people at the time. Perhaps it was also a recording of Richard Strauss' "An Alpine Symphony," conducted by Herbert von Karajan, who had outed himself as a big fan of the CD from the very beginning, describing it as "a miracle." Another legend says it was waltzes by Chopin that were pressed onto the first CDs. The first industrially produced discs rolled off the production line on August 17, 1982, and legend has it that the ABBA album "The Visitors" was burned on them. In 1981, the CD was presented at the Berlin Radio Exhibition. Finally, it was agreed that the playing time of a CD should be long enough to fit one of the world's most famous classical works - Beethoven's 9th Symphony in Wilhelm Furtwängler's 74-minute version. The compact disc had been around for some time there was just a long argument about how much music should be pressed onto it. Be very wary of level-ups since your partner will heal up too, and you'll most likely need to get them down to 1HP again before long. You'll gain more star points from battle and level a little more frequently, which means more frequent free heals. Try not to level up too much before starting the Pit. I wouldn't recommend Last Stand for Mario since you're probably going to get killed by a half-damage attack from a late-pit enemy anyway. Early in the pit, Last Stand P is one way to make it easier for your partner to take small amounts of damage until they reach 1. If you don't feel like coin grinding and want to buy on a budget, then prioritize these badges: Piercing Blow is an absolute necessity, Super Appeal is good for Bonetail, and Happy Flower is OK for long battles(which is the majority of battles past 40). Use coin grinding to buy all available badges except for FP Drain(I found no use for that), Simplifier, and Unsimplifier(I made the mistake of thinking that Simplifier makes superguards easier turns out it doesn't, but Unsimplifier makes superguards harder, but with only one unit of star power, it's definitely not worth it). Multibonk is much better than Shell Shield and the attack power(2+2=4 as opposed to 3, 7+7=14 as opposed to 8 when in peril) helps as well. Buy Sleepy Sheep in Rogueport and store them and sell them in Petalburg for a 2 coin profit. I went with two Shooting Stars to deal with a line of 5 Elite Wizzerds(had to grind shop points for them, 370 in total. I recommend Heart Finder(to help keep partners at 1HP for Mega Rush P), Item Hog(equip after you get the Strange Sack to get items once in a while, including the surprisingly helpful Dried Shroom), and Pretty Lucky(There's no way to boost your defense, so luck badges are your only defense besides superguarding).īring 10 items.
